Georgia Tech QB Alberto Mendoza confirmed what we suspected about Tennessee fans who were in Bobby Dodd Stadium for UT’s win over Yellow Jackets
The Tennessee Vols improved to 2-0 after a huge 45-24 road win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday night.
The Tennessee Vols won a big road game on Saturday night in Atlanta against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, winning 45-24 in front of 52,113 fans.
Many of those fans were in orange as Vols fans did what they’ve become known for in recent years — taking over an opponent’s stadium.
We saw it in 2022 in Baton Rouge and also last season in Starkville.
Saturday night in Atlanta, however, may have been the Vols’ biggest takeover yet.
There were so many Tennessee fans in Bobby Dodd Stadium, in fact, that the noise impacted Georgia Tech’s offense.
At one point during the game, Georgia Tech had to go to their backup center.
Yellow Jackets quarterback Alberto Mendoza admitted that while backup center Will Reed did a good job, but it wasn’t easy because of the crowd noise.
“Will did a phenomenal job,” said Mendoza. “It’s not easy coming in as a center with the crowd noise and [trying to] hear everything while making the calls.”
The home team isn’t supposed to have to worry about crowd noise, but Vols fans managed to provide a little of the “Neyland effect” in Bobby Dodd Stadium.
“We walked into the stadium 60 minutes before kickoff and the majority of the crowd is orange,” said Vols head coach Josh Heupel after the game. “It’s pretty special. I’ve said it before — this fan base is the best in college sports, and we don’t take that for granted.”
On the flip side, Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon said the crowd noise when the Vols’ offense was on the field wasn’t too bad.
“There was a lot of orange,” said Brandon. “I was very proud to see all of that. It definitely made it easier — there wasn’t too much noise. It definitely got a little rowdy sometimes. But just seeing all the orange, it definitely made me proud to see that.”
Tennessee fans are the best in college sports. The passion of Vol nation never ceases to amaze me.
