The Pittsburgh Steelers opened the 2026 regular season with a win over the Atlanta Falcons, but the biggest storyline coming out of Week 1 had nothing to do with the final score. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was inactive for the game, and the drama surrounding his status is only intensifying. A trade request, limited practice reps, and a carefully worded update from Steelers coach Mike McCarthy have left Porter’s future in Pittsburgh hanging in the balance.

Multiple insiders reported Sunday morning that Porter was not expected to play, and sure enough, Pittsburgh made it official when he was listed as inactive. For anyone who followed the Porter saga all summer, this was hardly a surprise. Porter barely practiced during training camp, didn’t take a single rep in the preseason, and was limited throughout the two-week stretch between the end of preseason and the regular-season opener. McCarthy described it as a “ramp-up period,” but the situation clearly ran deeper than conditioning.

The trade request and McCarthy’s ‘company line’

Then came Sunday’s bombshell: Porter is considering all options, and has requested a trade from the Steelers, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. McCarthy, though, stuck to the script. Per Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said that quarterback Joey Porter Jr. was not ready to play this week after being limited in practice all week, but there is a plan to increase his participation for next week.

That reads like a company line. McCarthy is not going to tip his hand publicly while trade discussions could be happening behind the scenes. If Porter were dealt by Tuesday, it wouldn’t be shocking. And if Porter and the Steelers reached a mutual understanding that a contract extension would be revisited in the offseason and he decided to suit up and play, that wouldn’t be shocking either.

Everything is on the table

At this point, every outcome remains in play for Porter and the Steelers. Pittsburgh clearly feels comfortable enough with its cornerback room. Asante Samuel Jr., Daylen Everette, and Jamel Dean all got helmets in Week 1, and the defense dominated against Atlanta. But the Steelers know that in what might be their last window to seriously compete, they want their best corner on the field.

So the question becomes: what’s the endgame? This situation is not going away. It is not slowing down. It will keep simmering until Porter either straps up and plays for Pittsburgh or gets traded to another team. McCarthy’s measured comments suggest the organization is still working through it internally.

The Steelers have leverage because Porter is under contract, but Porter has leverage because his talent speaks for itself. Something has to give, and Week 2 will tell us a lot more than Week 1 did.
