The Miami Dolphins‘ offensive effort in Week 1 of the 2026 season was too inconsistent to give the team a firm chance to win. It was a disappointing but not overly unsurprising turn of events given all of the new around the unit.

Look. There’s times in every game where every quarterback flushes up within the pocket to throw the football. The Dolphins’ pass catchers faced opportunities like this one with Tua Tagovailoa, Skylar Thompson, Teddy Bridgewater, Mike White, Snoop Huntley, etc. So that’s not necessarily the story here. But it’s what the play represents that’s worth noting.
When you know your quarterback, you can anticipate these “bang-bang” decisions that happen in real time. And while some fans will be quick to point to the Dolphins’ lack of playing time in the preseason, it’s probably not safe to assume such opportunities successfully stave off these hiccups. It’s a new group. And, generally speaking, this offense has leaned heavily on “timing” over the past few years. This isn’t timing. It’s something different.
Whether or not all of the parties involved will mesh enough to inspire confidence for the future by the end of this season is still to be determined. But the best measuring stick we can use is whether or not these miscues happen time and time again. If they do, it’s a tough turn of events. If they don’t? Well, that’d be a nice start. Just don’t expect it to happen overnight. Or in a few extra preseason series.
