One of the Miami Dolphins’ ‘prove-it’ players in 2026 is literally begging to stay for the long haul
One of the Miami Dolphins’ many players on a one-year ‘prove-it’ deal is having the time of his life in South Florida.
Take a look at the Miami Dolphins‘ roster when you have a second. Beyond the many rookies and second-year players who are seizing snaps, the other thing that becomes readily apparent is the number of one-year contracts across the roster.
As general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has pointed out, the team’s outgoing free agent pool last season required some drastic measures. The hope is that among those many short-term deals, a few long-term answers will emerge. One may be showing up on the defensive side of the football — especially if the player in question has his way. South Florida native and current Miami Dolphins edge rusher Josh Uche is, quite literally, begging to stay on with the Dolphins despite playing on a one year deal. The quote comes courtesy of Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Miami Dolphins pass rusher Josh Uche really wants to stay with the Dolphins

“I really want to be here. This is the most fun I’ve had playing football in my career, by far. A group of guys I really care about, a head coach I care about…I understand the nature of the business, but man if it was up to me, I would be here for the rest of my career. If you are all listening, please keep me. I want to be here for as long as the future holds for me.”

Talk about buying in on a team’s vision. That’s a heck of a quote from Uche. He has pinballed around the league while playing for perennial contenders like the Chiefs, Eagles, and Patriots. Uche is not only having the most fun of his career in Miami, though. He’s also playing the most football of his career. He’s played 240 defensive snaps thus far this season; just four less than he did in all of 2025 and nine less than he did in all of 2024. As a matter of fact, he’s 135 snaps away from a career high.
Uche is meeting the moment
The Dolphins are affording Uche an opportunity he’s never had before. And he’s making the most of it. The run defense has been a pleasant surprise, even if the pass rush profile isn’t as prolific as it was when he was a double-digit sack guy earlier in his career.
Perhaps even more notable than Uche’s hope to stay in Miami? His words on Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley. In Barry Jackson’s story, Uche is quoted as saying ‘I’m ready to go to war with (Hafley)’. These are the kinds of hits you’re looking for when you hand out “prove-it” contracts. Miami has been looking for a few guys to take the ball and run with it while buying into the program. It sure seems like Uche is going to be one of them.
Whether or not they’ll honor his plea? That’s to be determined. But it’s hard to imagine being upset if they did.
