Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is set to return to football on Monday night, nine months removed from a serious knee injury.
One of Mahomes’ biggest motivators to get back healthy and better than ever in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season? His kids. He spoke in late July about how hard it was, early in his recovery from the knee injury, to be the dad he wanted to be.
“Honestly, the toughest part was at the beginning, not being able to get up and chase my kids around,” Mahomes answered. “I know it sounds crazy, but being a dad and being active, I always want to be around my kids and playing and stuff like that. That was tough. But once I was able to do that, it kind of motivated me to keep getting better and better. So, when Bronze has a T-ball game, or Sterling is playing soccer, I can be out there with them. I always knew I was going to get back, just because of my mindset and the people around me. Once I was able to do that, it mentally helped me get through this process.”
Mahomes, as competitive as he is, even set a personal milestone: to walk before his 11-month-old daughter, Golden, did. Now, on the precipice of his return to football, his kids are sending him a message.

Ahead of kickoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football”, The Players’ Tribune shared an adorable video for Mahomes. His wife, Brittany Mahomes, recorded and shared messages from their children, Sterling and Bronze.
“Daddy, I love you. I’m so happy that you get to go back to playing football.”
“I love you so much. We’re so happy that you get to play football again, and we get to watch you. You’re the best daddy in the world.”
QB1 reacted to the video on X (formerly Twitter), quoting it with three heart emojis. Needless to say, that’s got to mean a lot for Mahomes. Playing in the NFL requires sacrifice. You miss a lot of moments as a dad. He tries to be as present as possible and include them in his life as a professional athlete. That same experience growing up in the clubhouse with his dad helped shape him. Coming back from injury in record time also takes a ton of hard work and commitment. Hearing his children’s excitement surely makes it all worth it.
