Dallas Goedert confirms a growing suspicion that the Eagles’ offense can’t afford to ignore
The tight end is still one of the most impactful pieces of the offense, and the new system will only highlight his importance.
Jalen Hurts put together a couple of plays, ran for 22 yards, and set up the second Dallas Goedert touchdown against the Washington Commanders. And it raises a question everybody should be asking right now: if the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t have Dallas Goedert, where would they be?
We really need to thank both Goedert and Howie Roseman for making this thing work to bring him back. Tight end Eli Stowers, the second-round rookie, did nothing in camp. He is currently on IR and will miss the first four weeks of the season. If Goedert did not take a hometown discount and come back to Philadelphia, I don’t know where this team would stand right now.
But everybody acted like he’s just on his last leg, like this is just the last year of Goedert and he’s just being nice, being that veteran presence. No. Dallas Goedert can play football, and he showed that on Sunday. I think he’s one of the most important people in the Eagles’ offense. He’s the security blanket for Jalen Hurts. Simple as that.
Goedert brings an element Hurts needs from his pass-catchers
The Eagles need reliable targets, and Goedert continues to prove he’s exactly that. With Stowers unavailable and the tight end depth looking thin, Goedert’s decision to return on a team-friendly deal looks like one of the smartest moves of the entire offseason. Roseman gets a lot of credit for the way he maneuvers the cap and builds this roster, and rightfully so, but this one was a collaborative effort. Goedert wanted to be here, and the Eagles needed him here. It worked out for everybody.
We covered previously how important the tight end position is to this offense. Hurts thrives when he has a reliable outlet over the middle, someone who can move the chains on third down and be a factor in the red zone. That’s Goedert. Two touchdowns in Week 1 should quiet some of the doubters who thought he was washed or just hanging around for one last ride. The guy is producing and making plays. This offense looks significantly better because of it.
So the next time someone tells you Dallas Goedert is just a nice veteran story, remind them of this game. He’s not a feel-good footnote. He’s a legitimate weapon, and the Eagles are lucky to have him back.
