Kyler Murray Injury Update: Kevin O’Connell talks about Vikings’ starting quarterbacks’ concussion suffered vs. Packers
It was brutal to watch the injury suffered by quarterback Kyler Murray against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
When Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a concussion on the 11th play of his season. He went into a fencing response after the hit and was ruled out quickly.
Dealing with concussions isn’t the easiest injury, because the healing process isn’t always linear. Head coach Kevin O’Connell talked about Murray’s status during his Monday press conference.
“Kyler came in feeling pretty good today,” said O’Connell. “He is in the protocol, so we’ll defer to the medical folks in that protocol to know how the week goes. We’ll just take it a day at a time.”

We are going to be in a major wait-and-see mode with Murray’s status all week, as the concussion protocol is a lengthy process. There are multiple hurdles that Murray needs to clear, including being healthy enought to practice by the end of the week.
The good news for the Vikings is that Murray was feeling good enough to participate in meetings.
“It’s clearing physical hurdles, but that is not as important as making sure he still he was in meetings today. He’s not having the type of symptoms where he’s not able to be in meetings or things like that. He was able to watch the tape, and we’ll just take it a day at a time and see how he’s doing and make the determination when that time comes.”
That’s a very positive step forward for the Vikings, and it theoretically keeps the door open for him playing. Will he get to that point? Because he was fencing after the hit, I have severe doubts.
O’Connell also talked about the hit and how it was a physical, violent football play.
“It was a violent physical play,” said O’Connell. “Obviously, from our standpoint, I don’t necessarily know where that’s coming from. I know the league took a look at it, and as fast as those things happen out there, it would be one thing if there was a headfirst slide and a clear declaration, but I don’t put any fault on anybody there.”
This week will be huge for Murray’s health, and the sooner the Vikings have an answer, the better.
