Adam Schefter just sent Broncos Country for a loop with some news he broke before the kickoff of Denver’s 2026 season against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs kick off ESPN’s 2026 regular season slate on Monday night. Ahead of that game, ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a bombshell update on a move that could have happened for the Broncos last season, one that would have been one of the craziest comebacks in NFL history.
According to Schefter, Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees considered coming out of retirement last season to play with Denver. The consideration came following quarterback Bo Nix’s fractured ankle in an overtime win against the Buffalo Bills. Brees had conversations with former Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi about potentially coming out of retirement following his 47th birthday.
Brees wanted to go through a workout, see what his body still had in it, and determine whether he could still play the quarterback position at a respectable level.
The goal would have been to suit up and play in the AFC Championship Game for the Broncos.
Drew Brees’ comeback attempt was shut down by a wrist issue
According to Schefter’s report, once Brees tried to work out, he found some discomfort in his wrist. That shut down the idea of what would have been one of the wildest comebacks this game has ever seen.
Brees hasn’t played since the 2020 season when he went 9-3 in 12 games with the New Orleans Saints. In what was his final season, he threw for 2,942 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s a former Super Bowl champion, 13-time Pro Bowler, and former All-Pro.
The Broncos lost the AFC Championship Game to the New England Patriots. Brees would have had a chance to play just one game and then suit up for the Super Bowl if Denver advanced. It’s wild to think about what that scenario could have looked like, all because of the fractured ankle for Nix.
