The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their inactive players ahead of their Week 1 tilt against the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

LT Josh Simmons and S Chamarri Conner were ruled by the Chiefs out on Saturday. That said, the Chiefs made a handful of other inactive decisions, with a full seven players inactive for the game. Both of the team’s practice squad elevations are active. Several newcomers are inactive.

One inactive decision stands out as uncommon for Kansas City. The team will take advantage of having three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. They’ll use a fairly new NFL rule, making a QB inactive and designating him the emergency third quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs will take advantage of the NFL’s emergency third QB rule this season

The NFL brought back a revised version of the emergency third QB rule in the 2023 season. The Chiefs haven’t used it until now. Teams can designate an emergency third quarterback among those players they deem inactive at the start of the game. He can dress and play ONLY if the top two active QBs are injured or disqualified.

In this case, Garrett Nussmeier will serve as the Chiefs’ emergency third QB. If Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields were to get hurt or disqualified, Nuss would be allowed to come into the game and play. Keep in mind, teams cannot put an emergency third QB in the game because of performance issues. It is reserved only for injury or disqualification, ensuring the game can be played without someone playing out of position.
