Lions make 3 roster moves hours before Bills game, including bringing a familiar veteran back to the 53-man roster
The Lions elevated two offensive linemen to handle their Week 2 injury issues and officially brought Levi Onwuzurike back after last weekend’s roster maneuvering.
The Detroit Lions are just a few hours away from playing the Buffalo Bills in their new stadium on Thursday Night Football. Due to some injuries, the Lions had to make a few roster moves to help themselves out. Here’s what they did:
Elevated Devin Cochran from the practice squad
The Lions need some tackle help with Miller not playing and Borom starting at right tackle. Cochran has plenty of swing tackle experience with the Bengals, so he should be able to step right in and play this role for the week. The fact that they didn’t sign him to the 53-man roster is a pretty good sign that Miller being out is just a precautionary move on a short week.
Elevated Seth McLaughlin from the practice squad
McLaughlin looked decent in his first go as a center during the preseason. You have to imagine he’s in here to serve as the backup center just in case Juice Scruggs were to get hurt or something like that. I would not expect to see him actually play in this game.
Signed Levi Onwuzurike to the 53-man roster
The Lions are back to 53 men on their roster now after playing some roster gymnastics with Onwuzurike over the weekend. At the end of the day, it was expected that they would release him ahead of Week 1 in order to make sure that his contract didn’t guarantee. Now he’s back on the roster, and we’ll see how much he plays this week. If we’re using Ben Stille as a measuring stick, he played nine snaps against the Saints. Of course, Onwuzurkie does have more pass rush ability than Stille, though. So we’ll see.
