Chris Olave, Chase Young limited with new injuries
Wide receiver Chris Olave (hamstring) and EDGE Chase Young (calf) popped up on Thursday’s injury report with new injuries that should now be monitored entering the weekend. They each went limited Thursday, so either they were injuries suffered mid-practice, or the team knew about them before practice began and purposefully limited each player throughout the session.
Whatever the case may be, it’s not ideal for the Saints.
Olave, who signed a four-year, $124 million extension in July, had a fantastic start to the season last week. He caught 10 receptions for 182 yards in last Sunday’s 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions. He’s Tyler Shough’s top weapon for a reason.
New Orleans was already counting on Devaughn Vele to step up as a starter with rookie first-round pick Jordyn Tyson on Injured Reserve. Vele, who caught seven passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, may become the No. 1 for Sunday if Olave can’t play. Rookie Bryce Lance may also be featured more. Lance hauled in three catches for 42 yards in his debut.
Young would be another crucial loss for the Saints. The 27-year-old led the team last week in pass rush win rate (18.5%) and was a millisecond away from an official strip-sack on quarterback Jared Goff. His absence would be an opportunity for former first-rounder Tryee Wilson to play more. Wilson took 23 snaps in Detroit.
