The New York Giants‘ Monday Night Football performance against the Los Angeles Rams was one to forget. Jaxson Dart left the game early, completely changing the complexion of the outcome and taking the wind out of the Giants’ sails. There was still a full game to be played, though, and there were winners and losers to sort through. The problem for New York is that the losers far outnumber the winners.

Winners

Jevon Holland

Holland made the kind of impact the Giants envisioned when they brought him to New York. Holland had two forced fumbles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. He was all over the football field and looked like one of the best safeties in the league. Good on Holland for making the most out of what was a bad situation around him.

Abdul Carter

pass rusher Abdul Carter also deserves recognition. The second-year player has been a bit polarizing, but he had a really nice win to generate a sack for the Giants. If Carter can continue to level up his pass rush arsenal, he’s going to be a problem in the league for a long time.

Losers

Jameis Winston

Quarterback Jameis Winston looked nothing like the player New York extended a few weeks ago. From a pure arm talent standpoint, it looked like Winston’s arm has turned into a wet pool noodle. He threw an interception where the ball completely died on him. A drive or two later, he tried to throw an out route and dirted the ball to his wide receiver. He looked flustered and flummoxed on the sideline. I understand the dramatic nature of the situation with the uncertainty at quarterback, but that simply was not good enough from Winston.

Matt Nagy

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy didn’t help matters. I thought the Giants could have gotten the run game going more to support Winston. When Winston first entered the game, they were trying to pound it, but maybe try some different runs. Nagy mixed in Najee Harris with Cam Skattebo, but there were real question marks about the types of runs they were utilizing and the passing concepts. I didn’t like much of what I saw. I get that the Rams were coming off an embarrassing game overseas and had extra motivation, but Nagy didn’t help his backup quarterback, and Winston was bad enough on his own.

Arvell Reese

Linebacker Arvell Reese is a player I genuinely don’t know what the Giants are doing with. I understand they want to play him at stacked backer, and he might be better suited for that role long-term than as a pure pass rusher. But here’s the thing: he can do both. He doesn’t have to be a stacked backer all the time, because it was clear once we got to the second half that Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay were targeting No. 52 in the passing game. Reese is a full-blown liability in pass coverage right now. In both zone and man coverage, he looks like a defensive end trying to cover tight ends, slot wide receivers, and running backs. The Giants have got to figure that out.

Greg Newsome

Cornerback Greg Newsome deserves some slack because he was going against Davante Adams, a bona fide potential first-ballot Hall of Famer. But it was pitch and catch for Stafford and Adams all night. Newsome was getting picked on from start to finish.

Giants Injury update

Brian Burns went down with an injury in the 4th quarter but the silver lining for New York is that wide receiver Malik Nabers got injured and returned. Jaxson Dart apparently wanted to come back into the game and was seen on the sideline during the second half. Shortly after the final whistle, Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported that the Giants believe Dart has suffered a sprained MCL, which, after how that injury looked and the tenor of that team, may prove to be a bullet dodged for New York.
