Jaxson Dart’s injury will ruin the Giants season with only one silver lining left to be found, and it’s not good enough
What looked like a manageable 4-to-6-week absence now carries the possibility of season-ending surgery, and the franchise’s 2026 outlook has shifted entirely.
The worst possible news has arrived for the New York Giants. After an atrocious Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the injury update on quarterback Jaxson Dart is far more severe than initially hoped.
Both Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport report that Dart could be done for the season, despite positive signs Monday night that the injury was only an MCL sprain that would sideline him 4 to 6 weeks.
A gut punch after a promising Week 1
This is devastating. In the throes of the moment, Dart walked off the field under his own power. He appeared to put weight on his knee and was standing on the sideline after the game. Everything pointed toward a return and recovery. If Dart missed 4 to 6 weeks, the timeline would have lined up well with the bye week. That possibility is now obviously off the table.
Frustrating isn’t even the right word. Dart was in the perfect position to succeed because New York built the offense around him in a deliberate manner that was repeatable against their upcoming schedule. Now the Giants have to go the rest of the year with Jameis Winston.
The playoff picture is gone
I don’t want to sound defeatist. I don’t want to come off as though I’m saying this team is doomed and there’s no way to survive. But with the amount of issues the Giants showed in Week 2, when the offense became one-dimensional without Dart, there is no chance this team goes to the playoffs. None.
The Rams are a fantastic team and the Giants performance against them has more to do with the quality of their roster. However, I don’t see a world where this Giants team sneaks up on anybody with how messy they looked on Monday night.
The silver lining is the 2027 NFL Draft
The redeeming aspect of a situation like this, when you have this many holes on the roster, is that you get to look toward the draft. The 2027 NFL Draft class is loaded with talent the Giants will be able to pull from.
The best possible outcome for the rest of this season is that New York ends up picking in the top 10 and has an opportunity to land Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore or a chance at Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. If the Giants get either player, that is a massive win. You come away with a potentially elite piece for 2027 and beyond.
The sad truth is that things weren’t looking great even with Dart on the field during his first drive against the Rams. The drop-off once he left was significant and stark. The Giants are going to be bad the rest of the year.
I know that sounds incredibly doom and gloom, but that is the reality after what I watched in Week 2.
