A Tennessee transfer addition who was mostly an afterthought for fans and media could play a big role for the Vols on Saturday against the Auburn Tigers.

Tennessee starting nickelback Qua Moss was added to the SEC injury report on Friday evening.

Moss, who is in his first season with the Vols after transferring from Kansas State, is in the concussion protocol according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

If Moss can’t play, it will likely mean increased snaps for Michigan transfer Tevis Metcalf.

Metcalf transferred to Tennessee in January with his brother, TJ.

At the time, TJ was the headliner of that transfer move as Tevis had played sparingly at Michigan.

Going into fall camp, there was no clear answer as to who would serve as the primary backup to Moss.

“They love Qua Moss as their nickel,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs this past summer. “The question is going to be, who’s the backup nickel? And I think that’s probably the overriding question of this secondary between now and the end of fall camp.”

Tevis took advantage of the open depth chart behind Moss and now he’s poised to play an important role on Saturday if Moss is unable to go.

The Alabama native played 11 snaps against Texas last week after Moss exited the game due to injury.
