Joey Porter Jr. Injury Update: Latest details on Dallas Cowboys CB shocking development provide much-needed clarity
The Dallas Cowboys expected Joey Porter Jr. to play without a snap count against Tampa Bay. Then he arrived at the facility, and the plan changed in a hurry.
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was shockingly ruled out minutes before kickoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now the latest details provide more clarity on the situation.
Porter was fully expected to play. The Cowboys didn’t even put him on the injury report during the week.
Dallas had also talked publicly about Porter taking on a larger role. Sideline reporter Kristi Scales said on 105.3 The Fan that the Cowboys expected to play him without a snap count. He played about half the snaps in the Cowboys’ Week 4 win over the Houston Texans.
Nothing pointed to Porter missing this game.
Why Porter’s absence raised eyebrows
A healthy starter suddenly ruled out with an illness naturally leads to speculation. That goes for Cowboys fans and the NFL world in general. Porter’s recent history only adds fuel to that fire. He was involved in a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers before they traded him to Dallas, claiming to have a back injury that immediately disappeared after he was traded.
But trust me, none of that is afoot here.
What we do know about Porter’s illness
Just look at the latest injury updates from NFL insiders.
NFL Network’s Mike Garofalo shared more on Porter’s condition: “I am told Porter has been vomiting with a bad virus, just not in a condition to play tonight for the Cowboys, as Jane Slater indicated.”
As for Slater, she reported Porter Jr. was “very sick” when he arrived at AT&T Stadium and the Cowboys sent him home. So it is what it is. Porter caught a bad virus before the game, and sometimes unlucky breaks like that happen.
We don’t know much more than that yet. But we know this was an unexpected illness and nothing more.
Hindsight is 20/20, but the signs were there. Earlier in the day, Joseph Hoyt from Dallas Morning News Cowboys published a video of Porter’s arrival to the locker room. He looked under the weather, and you can see him bring his hand to his mouth as he walks in.
A tough blow for the Cowboys secondary
Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they have to play a game without their new cornerback. Remember, Dallas traded a second-round pick in the 2028 NFL draft, plus a 2027 fifth-rounder, to land him.
The timing couldn’t be much worse. The Cowboys secondary is already dealing with so many injuries, and losing Porter right before kickoff stretches that group even thinner.
And yet, Dallas can’t use it as an excuse.
The Cowboys take on an undrafted rookie quarterback in Jalon Daniels and the Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. Even short-handed, that’s a matchup the defense should be able to handle.
For now, the hope is Porter shakes off the virus quickly and gets back to the larger role Dallas had planned for him. And of course, for the banged-up secondary to do enough for the Cowboys to secure a winning record for the first time this season.
