The Kansas City Chiefs are back at practice after a Week 5 bye.

As preparations begin for Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to the media. Naturally, he provided injury updates on key players returning from the week off.

Where exactly do the Chiefs stand in terms of their injury situation? A few big questions remained after the bye week. At wide receiver, Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice were injured in Week 4. Josh Simmons missed the first four weeks of the 2026 NFL season due to a back injury. Plus, Omarr Norman-Lott is eligible to return from the Reserve/PUP list following his 2025 ACL injury.

Coach Reid spoke about each of those situations.

Rashee Rice is the only Kansas City Chiefs player slated to miss practice on Wednesday

Rashee Rice left Week 4’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders just five snaps in with a hamstring injury. He tried to return, but Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder shut him down.

“As far as injuries go, Rashee (Rice) will be the only one that doesn’t go today,” Rice said. “Everybody else is scheduled to do something.”

When asked whether Rice will practice at all this week, Reid seemed to suggest it’s not out of the question.

“Yeah, we’ll just kind of see how it goes,” Reid said. “He’s actually feeling pretty good as he goes here, but we’ll see. I mean, those things you start dealing with hamstrings, it could be a week, could be two weeks. I mean, you don’t know. But I know he’s eager to get back in.”

We’ll monitor Rice’s status on the injury report this week, knowing the team currently has only four other receivers on the 53-man roster.

Kansas City Chiefs LT Josh Simmons set to practice for the first time this season

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that Josh Simmons will practice for the first time since mid-August after suffering a back injury. It was later revealed that he had been dealing with a bulging disc.

“Just got to ease him back in,” Reid said. “We’ll just see, ease him into practice. So, he’s going to practice, but on a limited basis there.”

Coach Reid made no promises about Simmons returning in Week 6. He’s skeptical enough that he hasn’t even thought about how he might adjust the offensive line when Simmons returns to the lineup.

“Yeah, I haven’t even gone there,” Reid said. “I’m just glad he’s having a chance to come back. When we start dealing with backs, you’ve got to ease it back in if you can get back in at all. So, we’ll just see how he does. So I haven’t really even gone there. I just know he’s wanting to get back out there, and this is the first step of that.”

Getting Simmons back on the practice field in any capacity is an improvement and a step in the right direction. Will they actually get him on the field for the Chargers game? I think that’s still a stretch based on Coach Reid’s comments. They need to see how the back responds in limited practice before making any decisions.

Omarr Norman-Lott is getting close, but not yet ready to return from Reserve/PUP list

Chiefs DT Omarr Norman-Lott suffered a torn ACL in Week 5 of the 2026 NFL season. He was on the Active/PUP list through training camp and the preseason before the team placed him on the Reserve/PUP list during roster cuts. He was eligible to return to practice in Week 3, but hadn’t made enough progress to do so.

Entering Week 6, Reid says that Norman-Lott still needs more time.

“He is getting better,” Reid said. “Yeah, he is getting better. I mean, he’s out working out with the trainers and doing that, but it’s getting closer.”

We’ll see what Week 7 brings for the 2025 second-round draft pick.
