The Kansas City Chiefs are on a bye week this week. That gives them plenty of time to add some wide receiver help. And, man, do they need it. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs some more bodies to throw to, because they seem to be dropping like flies.

Injuries to wide receivers Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice have created uncertainty at wide receiver, and everyone keeps bringing up Hill. There’s still no further news on Hill’s situation. However, there is news regarding another former Chiefs wide receiver. Reports indicate during the bye week, Kansas City is interested in signing free agent wide receiver Justin Watson.

Earlier in the week, both sides were reportedly interested. Now, on Sunday, Pete Sweeney of the KC Star is reporting that Watson is set to meet with the team in Kansas City on Monday. That doesn’t mean the Chiefs will land him, though, as other teams are interested, too. Both sides need to agree on a deal. But KC has the upper hand in the race to land Watson.

He likely wouldn’t mind returning to play with one of the greatest QBs of all time, Mahomes. Plus, adding Watson would give him the best shot at contributing immediately.

Watson joining the Chiefs seems to be a no-brainer

Watson is a three-time Super Bowl champion, and two of those rings came with the Chiefs. He spent three years in Kansas City and four with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Watson was a solid contributor with the Chiefs.

His best season came in 2023, when he caught 460 passes for 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Watson spent three seasons in Kansas City, catching 64 passes for 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

In Watson’s case, he wouldn’t have much to learn, if any. Maybe there’s some new terminology or a few small wrinkles, but the foundation would already be there. He knows the route concepts, the timing, and what Patrick Mahomes expects from his receivers. The fit is perfect. It’s not a superstar player, but it’s a body that could immediately contribute.
