ESPN’s latest 2027 NFL mock draft has the Miami Dolphins swinging for the fences

The 2027 NFL Draft isn’t quite shaping up how everyone thought. But the Miami Dolphins still get a chance to swing for the fences in the latest mock draft from ESPN.

The Miami Dolphins‘ trying 2026 season is far from over. Miami has 12 games left to play. But for many fans, the interest is just as buzzy on Saturdays as it is on Sundays as we near November.

That, of course, is where tomorrow’s NFL stars play. The college football offering each Saturday gives a peek at the prized draft picks of next April. And several of them are of note for the Miami Dolphins. The quarterback class? It’s a little shaky. But the Dolphins will have a chance to pick a signal caller if they want one. And ESPN has the Dolphins doing exactly that in their latest NFL mock draft.

ESPN’s Field Yates has the Miami Dolphins drafting Oklahoma State QB Drew Mestemaker with the No. 2 overall pick

“Miami has needs everywhere, but its modest investment in Malik Willis (whose three-year, $67.5 million contract has no guaranteed money beyond 2027) puts quarterback in play. The 20-year-old Mestemaker oozes upside, as the 6-3 215-pounder is a legitimate dual-threat player with exceptional creativity inside and outside of the pocket. I’m giving him the early lead as the top QB in the class, which aligns with Mel Kiper Jr.’s Big Board and Jordan Reid’s QB rankings.”

Mestemaker doesn’t turn 21 until January. And he also did not start a single game in high school at quarterback. His journey is…not the usual one. But he’s young, he’s got awesome physical tools, and he will be an easy prospect to talk yourself into given the upside. The scary part for Miami is that the Dolphins haven’t had a great deal of success trying to develop a quarterback in life after Dan Marino.

This pick would be the ultimate ambition selection. And, as Yates points out, his selection could co-exist with Malik Willis for 2027 and, potentially, 2028. That would give Mestemaker time to develop and compete with Willis for the ability to start. And if he sits, he sits. That’s a very “Packers” thing to happen — and Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan has watched that process play out twice in his career between Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers and Rodgers/Jordan Love.

Miami has plenty of time to make a decision. And so does Mestemaker — who is not a lock to be in this year’s class. So keep watching on Saturdays for the next five or so weeks. There’s plenty of Miami Dolphins interest to be found, even as the Dolphins aren’t playing.
