Aaron Glenn’s explanation for one costly New York Jets decision is almost as frustrating as the mistake itself

The game management effort by the New York Jets and head coach Aaron Glenn is under the microscope after another frustrating loss.

This is beginning to become uncomfortably familiar for the New York Jets.

New York saw a winnable game slip through their fingers, with some questionable management decisions for Aaron Glenn serving as a main sub-plot in the effort. Glenn’s admission of an in-game sequence to close the first half should be enough to drive Jets fans crazy, as the Jets allowed the Dolphins to drain the clock despite having timeouts to use. The strategy also caught the eye of a former Super Bowl winning assistant & analytics director, who appropriately took the Jets to task for their end-of-half management.

Super Bowl winning analytics director Ryan Paganetti takes Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets to task over clock management

“Man, we felt like we were going to stop them. And maybe we should have called our timeouts to get it back, but at that point, we just felt like we were going to stop them and be able to get the ball back. That’s something that we should have done is use our timeouts.”

I mean…you just can’t come straight out and say this without expecting massive amounts of blowback if you’re Aaron Glenn. As Paganetti points out in his rundown of the sequence, the Jets never even gave themselves a chance here. “There was no chance of any real time left based on how the Jets handled it,” said Paganetti. To roll with the gut feeling of “we’re going to stop them” and just assume that it would come at a timely matter should slot near the top of gripes that Jets fans have this time around.

Paganetti served a number of roles for former NFL head coach Doug Pederson in both Philadelphia and Jacksonville. His experience includes several seasons as the Director of Football Analytics for the Jaguars — probabilities and game management fall directly in his wheelhouse of expertise.

And one thing that’s evident, both to the trained eye of Paganetti and the untrained eye of fans everywhere, is that Jets’ end of half sequence was one of several costly management decisions that added up to help spawn another loss for Glenn’s Jets. This subplot needs to be re-written quickly for Glenn and the Jets — or else the noise is only going to get louder the next time New York fails to give themselves the best chance at success.
