Now, more than ever, it seems like quarterbacks are being charged with carrying more of the offensive load for franchises. That includes through the air and on the ground. That hasn’t really been much of a thing for the Miami Dolphins, however.

Tua Tagovailoa? Not exactly known for his mobility or athleticism. Ryan Tannehill? Athletic, yes. Dynamic as a runner? No. Chad Pennington and Chad Henne? Yeah…about that. And, as a result of Miami’s modest dual-threat resumes behind center this century, quarterback Malik Willis is already on the doorstep of setting a single-season record for the franchise. He’s 99 yards away from having the most rushing yards in a season of any Dolphins quarterback ever.

Malik Willis is 99 rushing yards away from the franchise’s single-season record for a quarterback

321 yards. That’s the current mark in a single season for the Miami Dolphins franchise. The total was set by Jay Fiedler back in 2001. It’s been challenged just once in the last 25 years, when Ryan Tannehill posted 311 rushing yards back in 2014. Not even the 2019 season, when Ryan Fitzpatrick led the team in rushing yards, came close (243).

Willis has 223 yards through six games. At his current pace of yards per game, Willis will surpass the single-season quarterback rushing record in three games.

It’s a value for Willis that has been hard to balance. The flashes and extended play ability are needed for the Dolphins. But the game against New York felt like the first time all season Willis had a proper grasp of when to get off his spot at the top of the drop. He also laid it on former Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick at the goal line for a score — the kind of thing you love to see. You just don’t want to see it too often.

So keep an eye on the rushing totals, Dolphins fans. We’re less than 100 yards away from the single-season quarterback rushing record for this franchise falling. And it’s October.
