Congrats on your first win, Miami! The cost of victory? Two Miami Dolphins starters have reported concussion symptoms after Sunday’s Week 7 win over the New York Jets.

Not cool. You know what’s even LESS cool? Who the players in question are. Offensive guard Kadyn Proctor and cornerback JuJu Brents are both in the NFL’s concussion protocol as Miami turns its attention to a Week 8 matchup with the New England Patriots.

Here’s the good news. This doesn’t have to be the end of the world for Proctor and Brents’ availability against New England. Both players have a the week to work through the concussion protocol, and that window gives Miami a real chance to get them back on the field.

That being said, this is going to come down to the wire. Concussion protocol is a step-by-step process, and there’s no shortcut through it. Each player has to clear every stage before he’s allowed back into full contact work. And the progress will be easy to measure. Just look at the color jersey they sport at practice…if they practice.

If Proctor and/or Brents do not suit up and practice at any point this week, they’re likely out against New England. But if they can return by the end of the week without a red non-contact practice jersey? It will give them a legitimate chance to clear concussion protocol and be ready to go for the Dolphins.

It is not a sure thing. And it would be a mistake to assume either player will be out there against the Patriots until the practice reports say otherwise. But Miami would obviously welcome that outcome. Proctor is a big part of the plan up front, and Brents just earned a bigger slice of the cornerback rotation. Miami would much rather have both of them available than scramble to fill two starting spots against a division rival. We won’t know officially until Saturday or Sunday. But Friday’s practice report should tell us which way this one is headed.
