Quarterback is once again a position giving the Florida Gators issues, and Jon Sumrall has a tough decision to make.

There is no good way to look at the Florida Gators‘ 27-8 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night. The one thing you can’t do is blame the defense for the loss, as they held up pretty well against Kirby Smart’s team and the Bulldogs scored 17 points off turnovers. Jon Sumrall‘s offense was the culprit behind the loss, and it started with quarterback Aaron Philo’s poor performance.

It was a rough first few drives for Philo, who threw two interceptions, with one being one of the worst throws you’ll ever see by a quarterback on the opening drive.

The second one was a nicely layered dig route to Eric Singleton Jr. that went through his hands and landed in the lap of a Georgia defender. He completed 5-7 for 26 yards and two interceptions before head coach Jon Sumrall pulled him for Tramell Jones Jr.

Jon Sumrall explained the decision to bench Aaron Philo

This situation was something that Sumrall talked about during spring practice, as he said they could choose to make a quarterback change if things weren’t going well. After poor games against the Missouri Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks, starting out this poorly made the decision relatively easy.

“I said, Here’s the situation where we would make a change after a few drives. It’d either be:

  • A. Philo’s not playing great
  • B. Really, the other one is he could be playing fine, but we just felt like we needed a spark or something different.

“Philo’s first interception [was] clearly on him, bad decision with the football,” said Sumrall after the game. “The second one hit the receiver in the hands, so we gotta catch that football. But I just felt like, hey, let’s give Tramell a shot. He got probably almost fifty-fifty reps total in the week Tramell did, just maybe not as many with the ones. They got about the same number of reps if you did a pitch count, because what we do in practice is we usually give the ones a block of plays, and the twos get the same exact block of plays. So preparation on knowing what to do really doesn’t change.”

Jones, albeit far from perfect, was much better than Philo, going 18-25 for 172 yards and a touchdown. Jones also ran for 17 yards and a touchdown on the day. The stark differences in their performances

The question is simple: who will start next week against the Oklahoma Sooners?

“I think we’ll assess it as we go forward. I like both guys,” said Sumrall. “I thought they both did some good things. I don’t know that either quarterback right now is playing on a level that’s going to take over the game and win it by themselves. We have to play a hell of a lot better around them. So, who will we start next week? I’m not in that headspace yet. I’m going to watch this tape tonight, and we’ll watch it as a staff tomorrow as a group. We need both of them to be ready to go play football to help us win.”

This is a turning point for the Gators in 2026. Their chances for the College Football Playoff are essentially shot with a third loss, and, even with hopes to make a run after the first four games, this team wasn’t at a point yet to make that run. However, it can be a building block to get there in 2027 or 2028.

Who should get the nod? Over the last four games, the best football has been played by Jones, and he gives the Gators something Philo doesn’t: juice on the ground. The Gators are certainly trending to be heavy in the transfer portal market for a quarterback, unless they see something more from this group before the season ends.
