The Miami Hurricanes went into their personal house of horrors on Saturday, after despite a major scare from the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Canes escaped 38-35 to move their record to a perfect 8-0.

The Hurricanes’ defense had massive issues, failing to generate pressure until midway through the fourth quarter and allowing Billy Edwards, Jr. to have a career day passing at 28/34 for 341 yards with four touchdowns and no picks.

But it was Miami’s offense that again proved its the best in the sport, and it’s not particularly close. The Hurricanes scored on six of their seven drives before running out the clock on their eighth and final drive. Five touchdowns, one field goal. 416 total yards, with 274 passing and 142 on the ground.

And for the first time ever, according to ESPN Insights, the Hurricanes handed legendary head coach Bill Belichick a loss when his team scores at least 35 points.

Miami becomes first team ever to defeat a Bill Belichick-led team that scores at least 35 points

Belichick is the most accomplished coach in the history of the sport of football, with eight Super Bowl rings — six as head coach of the New England Patriots and two as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants.

He is the greatest defensive mind the sport has ever seen. So it stands to reason his teams have found a way to win every time as long as his offense gets to 35 points.

And he had a great game plan for Miami on Saturday. Malachi Toney cannot be stopped for four quarters, but the Tar Heels held him in check for much of the second and third quarters before Toney gave Miami their winning margin with a nine-yard touchdown catch with under three minutes to go. He finished with seven catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

It’s not something you’ll hang a banner for, but it speaks to just how well Miami’s done on the offensive side of the football this year.
