Things have not gone well for the Miami Hurricanes when they go to Chapel Hill. The Canes have lost four of their last five matchups at UNC, and there have been some lopsided losses in that stretch.

But this Miami team has an offense that has a strong argument the best in all of college football. Will the Canes come away victorious in a place that’s been a house of horrors for them in recent years?

Our college football writers weighed in on the game.

Miami 41, UNC 24

Could this be a trap game for the Hurricanes? You can never say no with Bill Belichick on the other side, but it’s highly unlikely.

Miami has been phenomenal this season, with Darian Mensah taking a big step forward in Shannon Dawson’s offense. He and Malachi Toney have been fantastic this season, and the only way the Tar Heels have a realistic chance to win is by forcing the Hurricanes to win with explosive plays, as their best successes have been sustaining drives, with a 99th percentile EPA/play and non-explosive EPA/play.

Miami 47, North Carolina 21

This is an opponent that’s given Miami absolute fits, with the Heels winning five straight since Miami’s last win in 2018. Even the 2017 Orange Bowl Miami team struggled in 2017 in Chapel Hill against a 2-10 UNC team. It’s just how it’s gone in this series for Miami.

But this isn’t any Miami team. History and vibes can’t overcome a major talent edge that Miami holds, particularly at the quarterback position. Syracuse’s Steve Angeli threw for 256 yards and two scores last week, and the Orange had two receivers with 86+ receiving yards. Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney are about to go off, and the Canes won’t look back. The streak ends in emphatic fashion.

Miami 50, North Carolina 25

Bill Belichick has already gone on record about how difficult it is to cover Miami WR Malachi Toney, but now his team is going to get an up-close and personal look at just how impossible that task is. Toney had more receiving yards at halftime last week than the entirety of the Pitt Panthers. There’s a chance that happens again against North Carolina. Belichick may be one of the best defensive minds to ever grace the sport of football, but it comes down to having the horses on the field, and I think it’s safe to say that his stable isn’t exactly ready for Toney.

Miami will roll this week as long as they don’t look ahead to Notre Dame. Escaping a trap game ahead of next week is priority number one for the Hurricanes.

Miami 31, North Carolina 17

Miami comes away with a 31-17 win over North Carolina, but this game should be more competitive than the final score suggests. Bill Belichick’s squad comes ready to play and does a good job hanging around through the first half, making the Hurricanes work for everything offensively. North Carolina shows some fight on both sides of the ball, and the Tar Heels do enough to keep the pressure on Miami for much of the afternoon. However, the talent gap between these two teams eventually becomes difficult to ignore. Miami has more playmakers capable of changing a game in an instant, and that difference starts to show as the second half unfolds.

Quarterback Darian Mensah is the difference-maker for the Hurricanes when they need him most. With North Carolina still within striking distance, Mensah delivers a couple of explosive plays in the second half that swing the momentum and allow Miami to create some breathing room. Those plays help the Hurricanes put the game away and turn what had been a tight contest into a more comfortable victory on the scoreboard. Belichick’s team deserves credit for competing and making Miami earn the win, but the Hurricanes’ superior talent ultimately takes over down the stretch. Miami escapes with a victory, even if the final score makes it look a little more lopsided than it really was.
