New York Jets continue winning off the field despite losing on it as historic 2027 NFL Draft haul gets even better following Week 8
Another disappointing Sunday brought an unexpected silver lining for the Jets, whose rapidly improving draft outlook is creating a remarkable opportunity for the franchise.
Has a team ever held three top-10 picks in the NFL draft at the same time? Not until now. After Sunday’s games, the New York Jets own the 4th, 6th, and 10th picks in the 2027 NFL Draft order. Nobody has done that before, and that’s a big deal.
Every week, I track where the Jets’ three first-round picks stand here at A to Z Sports. This week moved the needle in a big way. New York lost, the Indianapolis Colts lost, and the Dallas Cowboys lost. The Philadelphia Eagles’ result Sunday night then bumped the Colts’ pick from 5th to 4th, so the Jets’ haul got even better before the weekend was over.
Now, will it stick? Probably not exactly. There’s a lot of football left. But I’ll repeat what I’ve said in every one of these updates: the exact slots don’t matter as much as the fact that the Jets have three first-round picks.
That gives New York the ammo to draft three really good football players. It also gives the Jets the flexibility to trade back in the NFL Draft and stack even more picks. There’s also a possibility to package the picks and move up if they fall in love with someone.
The best part is that your optimism requires faith in Darren Mougey, someone who has done good work so far, despite having Aaron Glenn as his head coach.
The Jets’ own pick and 2 games to circle
The Jets’ own pick sits at 6th right now. Look, we know this team is ending the season with a losing record. The question is where it ends up among the league’s worst teams.
The two games to watch come at the end of November, when New York goes on the road to face the Los Angeles Chargers and the Miami Dolphins. Both teams currently pick ahead of the Jets.
The Chargers are winless and hold the 1st pick in the draft. Miami already beat the Jets once this season. If the Dolphins win the rematch, the Jets would move closer to the top spot in the order. Those two matchups have the biggest potential to shake up where New York’s own selection lands.
The Colts’ pick looks like a top-5 lock
Indianapolis doesn’t have a brutal schedule the rest of the way, but the Colts are not a team that inspires confidence right now.
With the trade deadline approaching, there are rumors that Indy could move RB Jonathan Taylor, WR Josh Downs, and possibly more of its key veteran players. If that happens, it’s hard to see the Colts doing anything of significance the rest of the way other than competing for the 1st pick.
That pick belongs to the Jets, so every Colts loss is good news for New York. I feel confident this one finishes as a top-5 pick. I don’t see Indianapolis winning more than four games this season.
They got blown out by the Jaguars yesterday and it’s safe to say there’s more of that coming.
Keep an eye on Dallas
The Cowboys are the wild card here. Dallas is not a good football team, but it still has everything in front of it because of where the NFC East stands.
The Cowboys sit second in the division at 3-5, behind the New York Giants at 4-2-1. That means Dallas is still in the hunt for a division title and a playoff spot, and that race could push this pick lower in the first round.
Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t turning into a “bad” pick. I don’t see the Cowboys winning a playoff game even if they sneak in. But a division title would drag this selection out of the top 10 and closer to the middle of the round.
The Cowboys host the Colts this week, so one Jets pick improves and the other slides no matter what. It evens out in the short term, but Dallas has a tough road ahead and will keep fighting for the division. That’s the pick most likely to move a good bit before the season wraps up.
The Jets likely won’t keep all three of these picks in the top 10 for the 2027 NFL Draft. I’d bet on the Colts’ pick finishing in the top five, the Jets’ own pick hanging around the top eight, and the Cowboys’ pick sliding a bit.
Either way, New York will enter the 2027 offseason with more premium draft capital than anyone in the league.
