New details prove why Kalen DeBoer had to suspend Alabama Crimson Tide legacy cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.
The Alabama Crimson Tide suspended legacy cornerback Drake Kirkpatrick Jr. on Monday, and new details from his arrest paint a troubling picture. Here is why this situation feels different from a simple first-time mistake.
The Alabama Crimson Tide officially suspended legacy cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. on Saturady. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer gave an update in Birmingham on Monday and made it clear that, based on what Kirkpatrick did and where things stand, the Crimson Tide simply can’t have him be a part of the team right now.
DeBoer’s update addressed the suspension. Now we know the reason behind it.
Why Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. was suspended by Alabama
Wyatt Fulton posted a verified mugshot of Kirkpatrick on X, confirming that the Alabama cornerback was arrested. The next question was what charges he faces.
Fulton also posted on X that Kirkpatrick was charged with one count of doxxing, a Class A misdemeanor in the state of Alabama, and a Class C misdemeanor for harassing communications, according to paperwork filed Monday.
DeBoer didn’t hide from the situation. He made it clear the program has a line, and that Kirkpatrick crossed it.
“We have an expectation and standard in our program and the team rules and things that go along with that. There’s still some details that I’m trying to understand, but it’s enough to where we know that’s not how we operate,” DeBoer said.
That last line carries the most weight. DeBoer admits he doesn’t have every detail yet, but he already knows enough to act. Coaches don’t usually go that far publicly unless they have seen plenty.
Alabama has one choice with Kirkpatrick
As I said Monday, I think Alabama only has one choice with Kirkpatrick.
It’s one thing if this is a first-time offense. A repeat pattern is a different conversation entirely. Let’s call it what it is: Kirkpatrick is now a repeat offender. This marks two years in a row that the Crimson Tide have suspended him. Whether the charges are misdemeanors or something more serious doesn’t change much. Once it happens twice, the conversation shifts from giving a young player grace to protecting the standard DeBoer just described.
The football side makes this sting even more. Kirkpatrick should have had a big game Saturday. When Red Morgan went down with a targeting call, Kirkpatrick was supposed to be the guy stepping in at the Husky position. Instead, he was suspended just hours before kickoff.
Alabama needed him in that moment, and he wasn’t available. For a team trying to stay on track in the SEC, that kind of absence matters. Losing a player to injury is part of the game. Losing one to something within his control is much harder for a locker room to accept.
A sad situation for a legacy player
Alabama has to sort through all of this carefully, but the path forward looks pretty clear. Kirkpatrick is a legacy player, and he should have done well for the Crimson Tide. That’s what makes this so tough to watch.
It’s not a great situation. Quite frankly, it’s a sad one. Legacy players carry a certain weight in Tuscaloosa, and fans wanted to see Kirkpatrick build on his family’s name rather than end up in a position like this.
DeBoer has been consistent about what his program stands for, and his comments Monday showed he isn’t willing to bend on it. Unless the remaining details change the picture dramatically, it’s hard to see how Kirkpatrick finds his way back onto the field for Alabama.
It is what it is at this point. The Crimson Tide will move forward at cornerback, and the focus now shifts to who fills that Husky role while this situation plays out.
