The Georgia Bulldogs missed out on signing one of the best wide receivers in football history, all because of the color of the socks they wear with their uniform.

Current Philadelphia Eagles star pass catcher, A.J. Brown, who was once a highly touted four-star college football recruit, joined Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast this week, where he revealed that he didn’t want anything to do with the Bulldogs because they wear black socks.

“I didn’t choose Georgia because I don’t like wearing black socks. And that may be crazy, but I hate wearing black socks,” Brown said. “Putting on black socks with black cleats, it’s so hideous.”

Brown ended up committing to Ole Miss’s white socks in February of 2016 instead.

“When I put on white, I feel so fast, so smooth. There’s something about it,” Brown said.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is somewhere shaking his head after hearing that one.

2016 was the year Smart took over as the Bulldogs’ head coach, where he led them to an 8-5 overall record. Georgia was stacked at running back at that time with Brian Herrien, Nick Chubb, and Sony Michael, but they could have most definitely used Brown’s hands.

Not to mention that Georgia was crushed by Ole Miss that year, 45- 14, with Brown catching four passes for 46 yards as a true freshman against the Bulldogs’ defense. Through three seasons with the Rebels, Brown hauled in 189 passes for 2,984 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.

Brown went on to become a second-round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2019. It might make Georgia feel better knowing the Titans missed out on Brown’s talent too, after they traded him to the Eagles in 2022. Since then, Brown has earned two Pro Bowls and an All-Pro nod, along with a Super Bowl ring.
