The Miami Hurricanes remained the number one team in the nation after defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 38-35 on Saturday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

However, the Hurricanes’ defense looked anything but number one-esque. UNC QB Billy Edwards, Jr. had a career day passing, completing 28 of 34 attempts for 341 yads with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Edwards seemed unbothered by Miami’s pass rush for much of the night, finding time to pick apart what’s become a suspect Hurricane secondary, or at least one that’s looked suspect in recent weeks.

How did Belichick and offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino come up with some an effective game plan? Well, according to Belichick, they at least felt they knew what was coming from Miami’s pass rush.

Bill Belichick hinted at Miami’s pass rush scheme being predictable

Belichick was asked about the sequence that led to a sack fumble that turned the game around midway through the fourth quarter for Miami, and he had a very blunt assessment of Miami’s defensive game plan on the night.

“They didn’t mix it up,” Belichick said. “They did what they did the whole game. They ran what they ran the whole game, which is honestly what they’ve been running the whole year.”

The Tar Heels’ offense certainly looked like they were reading the Hurricanes’ defense for much of the game. That is until Marquise Lightfoot got home and helped dislodge the ball from Edwards with under eight minutes left and Miami up 31-28, and Justin Scott pounced on the ball. Miami would go down and score to put the game just out of reach with under three minutes left.

But Belichick’s comments, if true, raise a red flag about whether Miami is being too predictable with their pass rush scheme. We’ll find out on Saturday night how Miami chooses to attack CJ Carr and the Notre Dame offense with the eyes of the nation on them.
