The 6-0 and No. 1 Miami Hurricanes host the 5-2 Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday at noon ET at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Hurricanes top both polls after defeated Florida State 43-35 in double overtime last Saturday. Pittsburgh dropped a 27-21 game to Boston College on the road.

Can Miami get back to dominating the opposition? Or will Pat Narduzzi pull off another upset special? Our A to Z Sports college football writers weighed in.

This would have been a phenomenal game if Mason Heintschel hadn’t suffered a torn ACL a couple of weeks ago. They were humming early on with a 5-0 start but have dropped two in a row. With Heintschel at the helm, I believe this would have been a really good game! Unfortunately, that won’t happen, and the Hurricanes get the win relatively easily. They need a bounce back game after the disaster that was the Florida State outing.

Miami takes care of business against Pittsburgh with a convincing 38-17 win, using its explosive offense to pull away from a Panthers team dealing with major questions at quarterback. With Mason Heintschel injured, Pitt faces an uphill battle trying to keep pace with the Hurricanes, especially if the offense struggles to sustain drives and puts its defense in difficult situations. Miami has too much firepower to let that opportunity go to waste, and Darian Mensah continues to build momentum with another strong performance. The Hurricanes attack through the air, stretch the field and capitalize on scoring opportunities to establish control early.

Mensah and Malachi Toney continue to look like one of the most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations in the country, and Pittsburgh has few answers for their connection. Toney’s explosiveness gives Miami a game-changing weapon, while Mensah’s confidence and command of the offense allow the Hurricanes to keep the pressure on throughout the afternoon. Pitt may find a few opportunities to put points on the board, but the quarterback situation makes it difficult to consistently match Miami’s scoring pace. The Hurricanes pull away in the second half and reinforce the idea that their offense is capable of carrying them through the toughest stretch of the season.

The Hurricanes, for the first time in 24 years, are the nation’s top team, even if they didn’t look like world beaters last weekend in a double overtime win over FSU. That win exposed some flaws in Miami’s defense, particularly in a secondary looking to get back to form after a host of injuries, and it’s something the Hurricanes will have to work to get right in the coming weeks ahead of a massive clash with Notre Dame on Nov. 7.

Pitt seems on paper to be that elixir right now, as the Panthers have struggled at QB with Mason Heintschel out for the season. I still think Pitt will find a couple of opportunities in the passing game and cash in to keep this game interesting. The Panthers’ defense is also physical and capable of keeping Miami from running away with this one.

Ultimately, Miami’s offense, which is on the field for 35+ minutes, wears down Pitt’s defense with a late hard-hitting dosage of Mark Fletcher, Jr. and Javian Mallory, and Miami wins impressively enough, if not dominantly.

I know the Hurricanes went to overtime with a now 3-4 FSU Seminoles last week, but that is a rivalry game that always gets wild. It felt like Miami didn’t want to use their best plays and just beat the Seminoles with better athletes for much of the game. This week is a tougher Pitt squad on paper, but with plenty of questions at quarterback and a cool-down after starting hot, I think Miami has no problem on Saturday. Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney, and Mark Fletcher will overwhelm that Panthers defense and give Miami a chance to run away with the game.
