Notre Dame football has a busy stretch of recruiting kicking off this weekend. That includes at the wide receiver position, where head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are going to welcome Julius Jones Jr. and Myles McAfee to South Bend for official visits. The team desperately needs to add some more talent to go with current commit Jackson Coleman

It has been a pretty odd wide receiver recruiting process so far. That includes a couple of early misses and several other targets that are no longer on the board. One interesting name from the past is 2027 Duncanville (Texas) High School wide receiver Trenton Yancey, a talented player who actually made a visit to South Bend this offseason.

While it appeared that the Irish program was beginning to gain some momentum with Yancey, there was an abrupt snag in the recruitment. It quickly became apparent that Yancey wouldn’t be a great fit for the Notre Dame class. The Irish opted to prioritize other options and stop recruiting him.

Even though Yancey wasn’t going to end up in South Bend, he was still a very talented player, and it was going to be interesting to see where he ended up. We saw on Tuesday that Yancey’s new home was going to be in the Big Ten with the Purdue Boilermakers. Head coach Barry Odom’s squad was able to win out over an extremely impressive group of suitors.

For Notre Dame, the focus is fully on closing the deal with Jones. From there, the team will also be hosting 2027 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy star Osani Gayles for an official visit next weekend. It’ll be interesting to see how the Irish staff handles the duo of McAfee and Gayles if they do land Jones near the end of the month.

Trenton Yancey’s recruiting background

Rivals has Yancey ranked as a three-star, while both 247 Sports and ESPN have him ranked as a four-star player. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Yancey currently rates as a four-star, the No. 232 overall player, the No. 31 wide receiver, and the No. 38 player from the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. 247 Sports is highest on the Lone Star pass catcher, ranking him as the No. 152 overall player.

While Yancey’s recruiting rankings are a bit all over the place, his offer list is extremely impressive. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Florida, Oregon, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oklahoma, USC, Miami, Florida State, Texas Tech, Auburn, Nebraska, Utah, Kentucky, TCU, Arizona, Washington, Wisconsin, Arkansas, SMU, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Pitt, Mississippi State, Cal, Colorado, and Purdue, among others.

Yancey put together a tremendous 2025 season for Duncanville. The 5-10.5, 190-pound wide receiver managed to haul in 54 receptions for 780 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed 31 times for 388 yards and ten more scores, an average of 12.5 yards per carry. That versatility presents tremendous upside on the college level as an offensive weapon.
