Notre Dame’s 2027 quarterback board could shift drastically after a flurry of recruiting updates and unfortunate news

Notre Dame will need to add more quarterback options to the board for the 2027 recruiting class after an unfortunate sequence of news.

The vibes around Notre Dame football recruiting have mostly been positive over the last several weeks. It appears that head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish have a chance to assemble another elite 2027 class, and they are expecting even more good news in the near future.

One position group that isn’t going as smoothly as others is the quarterback position. Notre Dame is in an interesting spot after Teddy Jarrard reclassified to the 2026 class. That allows for quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli and the staff to bring in another talented signal caller, in theory, but without a solid board, they were nearly starting from square one.

We quickly saw the Irish offer three 2027 quarterbacks – Champ Monds, Davin Davidson, and Kamden Lopati. Davidson is expected to commit to the Florida Gators on Thursday, and Lopati was just predicted to land with the Michigan Wolverines. In the blink of an eye, it appears that Monds is the lone remaining option on the board.

Early in the process, Notre Dame did do a lot of homework on the likes of Trae Taylor, Israel Abrams, and Peter Bourque, although they never offered any of them. Taylor has since committed to Nebraska, Abrams to Miami, and Bourque is trending to Penn State. It’s unlikely that the Irish will look in that direction again.

With the recent news and updates, there’s a chance that Notre Dame’s hunt for a 2027 quarterback could shift dramatically. Here are some things to keep a close eye on.

Go all in on Champ Monds

2027 Vero Beach (Fla.) High School quarterback Wonderful Monds IV is scheduled to visit this spring, and I would expect Notre Dame to make a strong push for him. “Champ” has some interest in the Irish, but other impressive programs are pushing hard. It will be interesting to see if the Irish can claw toward the top.

If Notre Dame can’t make a legitimate push, there may have to be a reset for their 2027 quarterback board. We are deep into the process for this class, so creating a major shakeup won’t be easy. The Irish staff is certainly capable of making it happen, however.

Could new offers be extended?

As of today, nobody knows if Notre Dame will definitely extend the quarterback board, but it feels highly likely. There is no intel on potential new targets that could be out there. Here are some that I would give a long look.

Jake Nawrot – Arlington Heights (Ill.) John Hersey

Nawrot has been one of the biggest quarterback risers in the 2027 class this offseason. The 6-4, 200-pound signal caller has been pursued by a healthy group of suitors. Notre Dame is likely too late to the game here, but Nawrot, being from Illinois, is certainly a help for a potential late charge.

Sione Kaho – Tacoma (Wash.) Lincoln

In terms of creators, there aren’t many quarterbacks in the 2027 class that can make magic happen out of structure like Kaho. He is a springy athlete with a ton of talent to develop. I would love to see the Irish staff give Kaho a long look.

Jack Sorgi – Lizton (Ind.) Tri-West

Sorgi is an in-state quarterback who was originally committed to Wisconsin. He is the son of former Indianapolis Signal caller Jim Sorgi, and we know how much Notre Dame has valued the sons of former NFL players. Sorgi has some good arm talent but isn’t the flashiest name of all-time, but at this point in the process, he would be a solid addition.

Kevin Verpaele – Merritt Island (Fla.) High School

It wasn’t too long ago that Notre Dame was in the market for a talented quarterback later in the process, and in the 2023 cycle, the staff managed to flip Kenny Minchey from Pitt. The Panthers have an intriguing commit in this class with Verpaele. He will need to develop physically and add weight, but there are some natural tools and creativity to work with.
