It's no secret that the Oklahoma Sooners have had a few underwhelming seasons over the last three years in a row. And, it's no secret that Brent Venables is kind of on the hot seat. Another year like 2024, and he could very well be gone.

But, that doesn't mean that there aren't people who don't have his back. In fact, most of the people who work for the university, work for Venables, or have ties to the school, are very confident in him. There are even former players, guys who didn't play for him but were very successful while at OU, who believe in him.

Even Baker Mayfield, the current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and former Heisman winner under Lincoln Riley, believes in a guy he's never played for.

"I have a lot of faith," Mayfield said at his football camp in Norman this week. "I mean, obviously, offensively, last year, they had a lot of injuries. You can't win when you have that many different starting rotations on the o-line, and it's injuries, it's a lot of things. But I have a lot of faith in Coach V [Venables]. The defense was great last year, and obviously that's the standard that he sets — tough, hard-nosed guys who hustle to the ball, and he's going to carry that over. I have a lot of faith in him."

Venables is known for his defenses, and he may be one of the greatest defensive minds in college football in the last 20 years. If he were fired, he would instantly be one of the hottest names in the coaching pool, even by Power Four schools. Unfortunately, Venables has had some really unexpected things happen over the last three years that have not helped him.

This offseason, though, he showed that he knows where he stands in terms of his job security. He's added a stud quarterback who has proven himself before, along with a great offensive coordinator, and made some huge portal and recruiting additions. The offense was the issue last year, along with injuries, and he seems to have addressed everything.

So, right now, everyone has their back.
