A couple of former Tennessee Vols assistant coaches from the Jeremy Pruitt era had a front-row seat for the wildest moment of Week Six's college football action.
On Saturday night, the Miami Hurricanes had a three point lead against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets with less than a minute remaining.
On third down, with the game clock under 40 seconds, Miami could've taken a knee and ended the game (Georgia Tech had no timeouts remaining).
Instead, they handed the ball off, which resulted in a fumble that Georgia Tech recovered. The Yellow Jackets then navigated their way down the field and scored a game-winning touchdown, ruining the Hurricanes' night.
(Note the announcer's comment just before the snap in the video below.)
Former Vols defensive coordinator/linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Kevin Sherrer is Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator/linebackers coach. And former Vols quarterbacks coach/running backs coach Chris Weinke is Georgia Tech's quarterbacks coach. Both Sherrer and Weinke were on Pruitt's staff at Tennessee from 2018 to 2020.
Former Vols strength coach AJ Artis is also on Georgia Tech's staff (as the Yellow Jackets' strength coach).
Just another example of what a small world college football can be.
As for the actual play, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal's comments after the game were confusing and indicated that he lost sight of the situation on the field.
Perhaps not-so-oddly, this isn't the first time that this has happened to a Cristobal coached team. A similar situation happened when he was the head coach at Oregon in 2018. And it resulted in an overtime loss to Stanford.
Maybe Cristobal should hand the headset to someone else next time his team is clinging to a one-possession lead with under a minute to play.
