Tennessee Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks met with the media on Tuesday after UT's second spring practice and he made a statement about a key position group that will undoubtedly get fans excited.

Banks was asked by a reporter about the impact of having a veteran like Omari Thomas on the interior of the defensive line and what he expects from the Vols' defensive line in 2024.

The fourth-year Tennessee defensive coordinator said that he thinks the Vols should have the best defensive line in the nation.

"We should really have the best defensive line in the country," said Banks on Tuesday. "I feel really good about our depth that we’re building. I feel really strongly about their attitude and determination that those guys have played with. I’m not even talking as much about football — just great guys. They’re great human beings and they’ve really worked hard. As coaches, we want to see guys develop to their full potential. Being able to see these guys go from year one to where they are right now has been huge and we’re super excited about those guys."

It's hard to not be excited about the potential of the Vols' defensive line in 2024.

Obviously, it all starts with edge rusher James Pearce, a dominant pass rusher that Banks thinks still has another level he can reach.

"We think the sky’s the limit for him," said Banks when asked about Pearce. "Obviously, he’s just a sophomore. I think he’s just scratching the surface on how good he can be. He’s extremely versatile…He’s got really good drop skills and ball awareness. We can all get better. I think James will be the first one to tell you there’s a lot of room for improvement on his end. And the good news is he’s working extremely hard right now to take another step."

Joshua Josephs and Caleb Herring, along with true freshman Jordan Ross, join Pearce as dangerous edge rushers that Tennessee will trot out on Saturdays.

The rest of the defensive line looks stout and deep, too.

Omari Thomas, Omarr Norman-Lott, Elijah Simmons, Daevin Hobbs, Tyre West, Bryson Eason, Dominic Bailey, and Stanford transfer Jaxson Moi are all extremely talented (and big) players that bring a significant amount of experience to Tennessee's defensive line. It's easily the most talented and deepest defensive line we've seen in Knoxville in the last 15 years.

Winning in the SEC is all about winning in the trenches. And if Tennessee ends up having the best defensive line in the nation, like Banks thinks could be the case, then the Vols will absolutely be a factor when it comes to winning the SEC and reaching the College Football Playoff.

Staying healthy will be key, but the Vols have the pieces along their defensive line to help this team achieve a special season in 2024.

If everything goes to plan for Tennessee, they could be one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season.
