The Tennessee Volunteer baseball team really likes to play Mississippi State. Like, really, REALLY likes to.

The Vols went down to Starkville over the weekend and delivered a sweep of the No. 9 Bulldogs. Tennessee won 6-5 on Friday night, then followed it up with 6-2 and 7-2 wins to leave town with a crucial three conference wins.

And it’s a very, very familiar occurrence for Tennessee. In fact, that’s been the result every time the Vols and Bulldogs have faced off going back to 2019. The Vols have now not lost to the Bulldogs since April 2019.

Tennessee continued its win streak over Mississippi State in baseball that now extends to over 7 years long

Tennessee lost to Mississippi State 7-5 on April 7, 2019 to give the Bulldogs the win in the rubber match in Knoxville.

Since then, Tennessee defeated Mississippi State 12-2 in the 2021 SEC tournament. In 2022, the Vols swept a series in May in Starkville. The following year in Knoxville, Tennessee again took all three games. During the 2024 SEC Tournament, they knocked off the Bulldogs 6-5 on the way to eventually claiming the tourney title. And then, of course, Tennessee swept the Bulldogs over the weekend.

That makes 11 straight wins for Tennessee over Mississippi State on the diamond, and for this year’s team, it could not have come at a better time. Tennessee improved to 7-8 in SEC play with the sweep, which pushed them firmly back into the picture in both the SEC standings as well as NCAA Tournament consideration.

We’ll see if Josh Elander’s team can keep the momentum going into next weekend, when Ole Miss comes to Knoxville.
