Vols insider addresses Chaz Coleman’s status at Tennessee as rumors circulate that he could still return to the team this fall

There are still a ton of questions about EDGE Chaz Coleman’s status with the Tennessee Vols as we near the end of June. Coleman hasn’t officially been dismissed from the program.

There haven’t been any real updates on the Chaz Coleman situation at Tennessee over the last couple of weeks.

Coleman, a transfer EDGE who joined the program in January after spending his true freshman season at Penn State, hasn’t been around the team this summer after missing most of spring practice with “personal issues“.

The feeling for the last two months has been that Coleman won’t be part of the team this fall, but he hasn’t officially parted ways with Tennessee at this point.

There have been some rumblings — some of those via callers on Tony Basilio’s show — that Coleman could still suit up for the Vols this fall (the rumors suggest that Coleman isn’t used to football being a 12-month job and that he’ll be “locked in” when fall camp arrives).

VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs, however, said on Tuesday during an appearance on WNML’s SportsTalk that he still doesn’t expect Coleman to be part of Tennessee’s football team in 2026.

“I don’t see him being a part (of the team),” said Hubbs. “I don’t think he’s a part (of the team) now. He hasn’t been a part. I don’t think there’s any reason to expect him to be a part of this team and be a factor this fall. Obviously, he’s dealing with whatever he’s dealing with. I think if you’re Tennessee, you want to be very mindful of whatever that is, and you want to handle everything the right way.

“The difference in this one and others in the past — such as Boo Carter — [is that] Chaz Coleman has never really been a part of the team. He was here — he got here in late January — and he basically went through four or five weeks of workouts. He was there some, I think, and then you start spring practice and then he quickly kind of disappears. And he hasn’t been back around. So he’s never been integrated into this team. It’s not like he’s been a part of this team for a year, and has been a contributor, and then all of a sudden is disappearing and coming back and disappearing. He’s just never been a part of team. So, I don’t think it’s ever been an issue with the team. I think this team has moved on, and I think this program is moving on. When does something become a finality? I don’t know. But nobody is talking about him even remotely being a part of things this fall.”

Maybe we’ll hear something final soon. It’s certainly been a bizarre situation, but it continues to sound like Chaz Coleman won’t be suiting up for Tennessee this fall.
