ESPN analyst made a strong statement about what Tennessee should do at QB after the Vols’ ugly win over Arkansas
The Tennessee Vols survived a scare on Saturday afternoon against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville.
It wasn’t pretty, but Tennessee got its first win in Fayetteville in 25 years on Saturday.
The Vols fell behind 14-7 in the second half before rallying for a 24-17 win over Arkansas.
Sophomore George MacIntyre, who was making his first career start, passed for 247 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the game.
ESPN’s Aaron Murray makes strong statement about what Tennessee should do at quarterback moving forward
It’s unclear what Tennessee plans to do at quarterback moving forward.
MacIntyre got the start after replacing true freshman Faizon Brandon last weekend against Auburn. Brandon is dealing with a shoulder injury that he suffered early in the game against Texas two weeks ago (Brandon wasn’t playing well against the Longhorns before the injury).
Before the game against Arkansas, Vols head coach Josh Heupel told ESPN that he preferred to not play Brandon against the Razorbacks due to injury.
Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, who called the game for ESPN, said immediately after the game that he thinks Tennessee should go back to Brandon as the team’s starter when he’s healthy (Brandon and MacIntyre were listed as co-starters this week).
“I think if Faizon is healthy, you put him as the No. 1,” said Murray. “And now you know you have a backup quarterback that has some experience. But I think they want Faizon to be the guy there in Knoxville.”
That’s an interesting take from Murray — especially since he met with the Tennessee coaching staff this week for production meetings ahead of the game. I don’t know if Murray is speaking based on information he gathered from those meetings or if he’s just speaking on his personal view of the situation. Either way, it certainly seems that Tennessee’s quarterback situation is far from settled right now.
