An ACC program fired its head coach and that could lead to some good news for Tennessee in a couple of months
The Tennessee Volunteers could be the benefactors of an ACC program’s decision to fire its head coach.
Maryland fired head coach Mike Locksley earlier this month and that could lead to some good news for Tennessee.
Back in the summer, the Vols were in the mix to land 2027 four-star defensive back Kenaz Sullivan, 6-foot-1/190 lbs from Springfield, VA.
Sullivan, who is rated by 247Sports as the No. 17 safety in the nation and the No. 4 player in the state of Virginia, committed to Maryland on June 20 over Tennessee, Florida, and Ohio State.
Now that Maryland has fired Locksley, the Volunteers are working to flip the four-star defensive back.
“You saw Mike Locksley get fired,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price this week on WNML’s Josh and Swain. “Tennessee finished runner-up for Kenaz Sullivan, the safety that Tennessee loves so much. And that’s why (Vol safeties coach) Anthony Poindexter has been on the phone with him the last seven days since Locksley got fired.”
“Coach Dex, he’s a real guy,” said Sullivan to 247Sports of Poindexter after he visited Tennessee in June. “He’s the realest coach I’ve met throughout this whole process. He’s kind of like an uncle to me and just taking in, learning from him, it’s good.”
Interestingly, 247Sports’ scouting report (via Andrew Ivins) on Sullivan compares him to Tennessee safety Dejuan Lane, a Penn State transfer who is in his first season with the Vols (and Lane has been terrific this season for Tennessee).
We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks, but it sounds like Tennessee is a team to watch for Sullivan if he decides to decommit from Maryland.
