It could end up being a very good thing for the former Tennessee Vols wide receiver.
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Cedric Tillman received some tough news on Thursday morning.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns are releasing Tillman.
The former Vol was selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
This may seem like bad news on the surface, but it’s probably a good thing for Tillman.
The Browns are an absolute mess, and it doesn’t appear they’ll be righting the ship anytime soon. Their quarterback situation is a disaster, and, in general, it’s a franchise where wide receivers go to die.
Tillman has shown flashes of being a starting-caliber wide receiver in the NFL, so he should be able to find another opportunity in the league.
The former Vol, for example, caught 24 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns over a four-game stretch late in the 2024 season (that extrapolates to 102 receptions and 1,283 yards over 17 games). But inconsistent quarterback play in Cleveland, combined with injuries, has prevented Tillman from reaching his potential as a pro.
A fresh start with a team that actually has a decent quarterback situation (and a direction as a franchise) could be all Tillman needs to finally reach his potential in the NFL.
