Former Tennessee Vols head coach Tony Vitello is already making his impact felt in MLB.

Vitello, who led Tennessee to a College World Series championship in 2024, was hired as the new manager of the San Francisco Giants late last month.

The former Tennessee head coach is the first college coach in modern baseball history to make the jump directly into a manager’s role in the big leagues without having previous MLB experience as a player or coach.

One of the best teams in MLB felt the impact of former Tennessee coach Tony Vitello in a big way this week

The Toronto Blue Jays, which lost the 2025 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games, felt Vitello’s impact this week.

According to multiple reports, the Giants are hiring Blue Jays assistant hitting coach Hunter Mense to serve as the new hitting coach in San Francisco.

Mense played under Vitello at Missouri in the mid 2000’s.

It’ll be important for Vitello to surround himself in San Francisco with coaches that have quality big league experience. Hiring Mense, who spent five seasons in the Miami Marlins’ minor league system as a player and spent the last four seasons in the big leagues as a member of Toronto’s coaching staff, is certainly a good start for Vitello.
