The national championship window for Tennessee has a start date and this time it’s very real for the Vols
The Tennessee Volunteers are about to enter the most real championship window that the program’s been in since the early 2000s when Phillip Fulmer was roaming the sidelines in Knoxville.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the Tennessee Vols last won a national championship.
And while we don’t know if the drought is about to end — college football is as unpredictable as ever in the NIL/transfer portal era — a window for the program to win a national championship will open in 2027.
Well, the window will open as long as the Vols land five-star running back David Gabriel Georges on July 22.
The Tennessee Vols could be legitimate contenders starting in 2027
2027 is the season when Tennessee could have the strongest roster it’s had since the early 2000s.
The Vols could have five-star Faizon Brandon at quarterback with five-star offensive lineman David Sanders at left tackle, five-star wide receiver TK Keys out wide, and Gabriel Georges in the backfield.
That’s in addition to other top recruits the program has already landed, plus transfers they could bring in.
“Let’s say you get [Gabriel Georges] and bring him in,” said On3’s Chris Low on 104.5 The Zone’s 3HL this week. “That would be Brandon’s — if he is indeed the starter — second year. It would be David Sanders’ third year. I think you set up in 2027, if all those things come into play, as an offense that has a chance to be really good. And TK Keys will be a freshman this year, it will be his second year.”
Gabriel Georges is important to this because he’s the type of transcendent running back talent who could completely change how Josh Heupel’s offense operates.
Heupel’s offense has produced three straight 1,000-yard running backs in Jaylen Wright, Dylan Sampson, and DeSean Bishop. But none of those running backs, and this isn’t any disrespect toward them, have been transcendent running backs.
Wright is buried on the depth chart with the Miami Dolphins while Sampson is behind Quinshon Judkins on the Cleveland Browns’ depth chart (we’ll see how Bishop, a former walk-on, fares in the NFL in a year or two).
Heupel’s offense utilizes light boxes to run the ball effectively. When Tennessee loses games, it’s often because the opposing defense is able to stop the run while using a light box (which allows the defense to play a “bracket” coverage against Tennessee’s wide receivers).
The Vols combated this last season by using more condensed formations at times. But the key to containing Tennessee’s offense is still by stopping the run.
Landing Gabriel Georges would give the Volunteers a dominant running back with first-round talent who could find success in the SEC even when teams are zeroing in on stopping Tennessee’s running game, which in turn would open up the passing game.
“Heupel does like balance,” said 104.5 The Zone’s Brent Dougherty. “It’s kind of sold as a run and gun type [of offense]. But if he gets a light box, he’s going to run it. And [Gabriel Georges] might be a caliber of running back that doesn’t need a light box — which will cause some consternation among [opposing] defensive staffs.”
When you combine the offensive potential that Tennessee could have in 2027 with the fact the Vols will be in their season with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, it’s easy to see how it’s the beginning of a real championship window.
“If [Tennessee goes] 8-4 and maybe gets a bowl win because of the continuity, and then you fast forward to next year and you’ve got a second year starting quarterback, a second year in a defensive scheme, some youth that’s coming up and progressing in the system, and some coaching continuity — assuming they don’t make a crazy decision — I would circle 2027 for a year where alright, this is when [Tennessee] can maybe make a run,” said ESPN’s Greg McElroy earlier this spring on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.
Nothing is guaranteed in college football. This window opening in 2027 for the Vols depends on player retention and performance. But if everything goes to plan, 2027 and 2028 are shaping up to be really fun years for Tennessee football fans.
