A former Lady Vols player made one of the best transfer moves of the transfer cycle according to On3’s Talia Goodman.

On Wednesday, Goodman pointed out former Lady Vols guard Ruby Whitehorn’s transfer to Arizona State as one of the most underrated transfer moves that’s gone down.

Whitehorn joined Arizona State in February after she was dismissed from Tennessee.

“This one is an underrated move because it seems like everyone has forgotten it even happened,” wrote Goodman. “Whitehorn didn’t have to actually enter the transfer portal — rather, after Tennessee parted ways with the star guard, she was able to transfer to Arizona State as a student and then sign on with the women’s basketball team near the end of last season. While the previous legal issues are something to monitor, Arizona State added an experienced guard who seems to perfectly fit the style Molly Miller has implemented.”

Whitehorn was dismissed from the Lady Vols program in November after she was stopped by campus police, who found her in possession of marijuana. She had just been reinstated to the team following an arrest in August.

From ESPN: Whitehorn had been allowed back on the team following a suspension for an August arrest. She pleaded guilty Sept. 5 to two misdemeanors of aggravated trespassing and aggravated burglary in exchange for judicial diversion after an Aug. 8 altercation. Her record can be expunged after a year.
The 6-foot player from Detroit was arrested after what police said was an incident at a woman’s residence where Whitehorn kicked in a front door and bedroom door. Whitehorn reportedly told officers she was retrieving her property after the woman took her phone and passport and then locked the door.

“In light of recent events, Ruby has been unable to reflect those standards, and I have made the difficult decision to dismiss her from our team,” said Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell in a statement in November. “I love Ruby and will always be rooting for her, but my priority is to uphold the respected reputation of the Lady Vols.”

Whitehorn, who started her career at Clemson, averaged 11.6 points per game in 2024-25, her lone season at Tennessee.
