Tennessee Vols baseball transfer Jay Abernathy connected to a hated rival SEC program
After spending the first two seasons of his college career with the Tennessee Volunteers, outfielder/infielder Jay Abernathy entered the transfer portal this week, and he could land with another SEC team.
Tennessee Vols outfielder/infielder Jay Abernathy entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week.
Abernathy, 5-foot-10/188 pounds from Acworth, GA, spent the first two seasons of his college career with the Vols. He’s a cousin of former Tennessee defensive back Micah Abernathy.
The Georgia native batted .255 with four home runs, 27 RBI, and 17 stolen bases during his two seasons with the Vols.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the Georgia Bulldogs are one of the early teams to watch for Abernathy.
Nakos also pointed out the West Virginia Mountaineers as a team to watch for the Vol transfer.
“Among the early teams to keep tabs on for the Tennessee transfer are West Virginia and Georgia, sources told On3,” wrote Nakos.
Seeing Abernathy land with Georgia would certainly be tough for Vols fans. He never reached his full potential at Tennessee, but he’s clearly a very talented player. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take off next spring wherever he lands.
Abernathy, like most young elite baseball prospects, was a shortstop coming out of high school, but he saw most of his action at second base or in the outfield while receiving uneven playing time on Rocky Top. He may find his groove if he moves back to shortstop at his next stop.
