Latest update from Jaguars insider signals trouble for former Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar’s NFL future
Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joey Aguilar went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft. Aguilar, though, quickly signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.
It’s only June, and it’s only minicamp, but things aren’t sounding good for former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar’s future with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Aguilar, who spent one season at Tennessee after a long journey that included stops in junior college, Appalachian State, and UCLA, signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent after going unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for Aguilar, his time with the Jaguars is not getting off to a good start.
The former Vol was singled out last week for “the worst play of the day,” and the latest update from Action Sports Jax’s Mia O’Brien makes it sound highly unlikely that Aguilar will earn a roster spot with the Jaguars this summer.
Jaguars insider says it’s been “a little rough” for Joey Aguilar
With Trevor Lawrence locked in as Jacksonville’s starting quarterback, Aguilar is battling veteran journeyman Nick Mullens and third-year quarterback Carter Bradley for a roster spot.
(Bradley, who is from North Dakota, went to high school in Jacksonville, so he’s somewhat of a “hometown kid.”)
O’Brien shared an update this week on how the quarterbacks behind Lawrence have looked during minicamp so far, and she said it’s been “a little rough” for Aguilar.
She also strongly suggested that Bradley is in the “driver’s seat” to win the No. 3 quarterback job over Aguilar.
“Joey Aguilar out of Tennessee, it’s been a little rough the first few practices,” said O’Brien. “I’m sure you guys have seen our friends John Shipley and Gus Logue and many of the other reports [talking] about the hospital balls (from Aguilar).
“Carter Bradley is absolutely in the driver’s seat for the number three quarterback spot ahead of Joey Aguilar. Yes, I know they gave Joey Aguilar good money. I get it. But that’s the name of the game in undrafted free agency. It is what it is. But I think [Bradley] is also trending towards pushing Nick Mullens (for the No. 2 quarterback job)… I think [Bradley is] pushing Nick Mullens more so than being pushed by Joey Aguilar.”
There are still three months to go until the start of the 2026 NFL season, so it’s early, but Aguilar appears to be trending in the wrong direction in Jacksonville.
And that’s probably not a good sign for Aguilar’s future in the NFL.
The former Vol will turn 25 years old later this month. He’s not going to be viewed as a developmental project in the NFL. The situation with the Jaguars was viewed as ideal for Aguilar because the depth chart at quarterback isn’t loaded with talent. If Aguilar is already clearly behind Bradley, a player who hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since entering the league in 2024, then there isn’t a lot of optimism that he’s going to make much noise in the NFL.
