Rebuilding the Tennessee Vols football program into a perennial powerhouse is a massive task that shouldn't have a timetable placed on it.
But Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt and his staff aren't about being patient and letting things just happen. They've put a timetable on when they think Tennessee will "be there" and it's a timetable they're sharing with recruits.
According to VolQuest, Tennessee's coaches think they need one more recruiting cycle (the 2020 cycle) to get to where they want to be.
Here's what UT's coaches told four-star 2020 offensive tackle Tate Ratledge during his recent visit, via VolQuest:
They say they need one more cycle, our class, and they think they will be there. All the coaches share that message.
This is a typical timetable for turning a program around. It usually takes a coach getting a couple of recruiting classes, not counting the first cycle which can be challenging with a staff change, to get a program to where it needs to be.
Pruitt and his staff have done a great job on the recruiting trail, especially considering the Vols were a 5-7 team last season.
But Tennessee showed promise — wins over Auburn and Kentucky helped — and that's something I think recruits noticed.
The Vols should show significant improvement in Pruitt's second season at the helm. If Tennessee is able to win 7 or 8 games, I think you'll see a massive uptick in recruiting for the Volunteers.
Until then, Tennessee just needs to keep grinding on the recruiting trail. All the time on the road is already paying off for the Vols.
