Former Tennessee Vols coach Tony Vitello is no stranger to getting ejected. It happened plenty during his time at Tennessee, and it’s already happened a few times with the San Francisco Giants.
But his ejection on Wednesday was particularly fun for fans because hot mics captured exactly what Vitello was saying when he argued that Cincinnati Reds third baseman Eugenio Suárez went on a check swing.
The video quickly made the rounds on social media, and for good reason.
I think the cool part of this video is that it shows Vitello standing up for his player more than anything. He wasn’t arguing with the umpire just to argue. He was arguing for his player.
(I especially love the part where Vitello says, “this guy is competing his f—ing ass off.”)
There’s been a lot of talk about how Vitello has been received in the Giants clubhouse by big leaguers since the former Tennessee coach didn’t have any big league experience when he took the job last fall.
Stuff like this will earn him a lot of respect in the clubhouse – and not just with the players on his team now, but with any players he manages in the future. Players want to know their manager has their back, and Vitello made that very clear to everyone on Wednesday afternoon.
By the way, I don’t think Suárez swung.
