The Tennessee Vols received a massive boost to their 2021 recruiting class this past weekend with five-star defensive end Dylan Brooks' commitment.

Brooks is one of the top rated players in the nation (No. 18 overall 2021 recruit, per 247Sports composite), so his commitment alone took up all the headline space on various websites.

But I think there's actually a bit "hidden" good news with Brooks' commitment that's somewhat been ignored over the last few days.

Brooks will be used as an outside linebacker/edge rusher at Tennessee. And that's a position where the Vols have a new coach this year.

Chris Rumph, UT's previous outside linebackers coach, took a job coaching linebackers in the NFL with the Houston Texans.

Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt hired Shelton Felton earlier this offseason to replace Rumph.

Hiring Felton could be considered somewhat of a risk. He was a quality control analyst at Tennessee in 2018 before serving as Akron's outside linebackers/defensive line coach at Akron in 2019.

Akron to Tennessee is a big jump for an assistant.

The commitment of Brooks, however, suggests that hiring Felton was a wise move by Pruitt.

Brooks told VolQuest this week that he was impressed with the way Felton carries himself, saying "he's just a cool person and I think he's a good coach, too".

Pruitt and defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley obviously had a major impact on Brooks' decision to commit to Tennessee. But Felton was also a big part of that decision.

Landing a five-star recruit after just a couple of months on the job (especially with the coronavirus related shutdown), is a great sign that Felton is going to be another stud assistant for Pruitt.

So far, Pruitt has displayed an incredible ability to hire elite assistant coaches. From big names (Jim Chaney and Tee Martin) to under-the-radar coaches that were relatively unknown (Brian Niedermeyer and Joe Osovet), Pruitt has proved he knows exactly what to look for in a potential assistant.

At this point, it would be hard not to trust Pruitt's ability to turn a football program around. He's certainly hitting all the right buttons at Tennessee so far.
