Former Tennessee Vols coach Tony Vitello made some San Francisco Giants fans look silly on Sunday night in Chicago.

It’s been a rough start to the season for Vitello, who is in his first year as the manager of the Giants.

San Francisco has been near the bottom of the National League all season, but things are starting to look up as the Giants have won four of their last five games.

On Sunday night at Wrigley Field, the Giants won the rubber game of a series against the Cubs.

Giants fans hated the decision Tony Vitello made in the 10th inning against the Cubs, but it worked out for San Francisco

The Giants beat the Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings on Sunday night after pushing a run accross in the top of the 10th and then holding Chicago scorless in the bottom of the inning.

After taking the lead in the top of the inning, Vitello turned to RHP Dylan Smith for the save chance.

For some reason, Giants fans hated the move.

Smith struck out Michael Conforto to begin the 10th inning. After Pete Crow-Armstrong (the free runner in extra innings) stole third with one out, Smith got the next two batters — Alex Bregman and Michael Busch — to pop out to shortstop Willy Adames to end the game.

It’s tough to hold the home team scoreless in extra innings, but Smith did the job. And Vitello got the last laugh.

Smith, by the way, played college baseball at Alabama. He competed against Vitello and the Volunteers in 2021, throwing four shutout innings in a game that was eventually won by Tennessee in extra innings.
