There’s one thing we would like to see Tennessee try against Kennesaw State, and if it works it can be a weapon against Texas
Tennessee has a “tune up game” against Kennesaw State on Saturday before a huge matchup against Texas on September 26.
Tennessee will host Kennesaw State on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium before Texas comes to town on September 26 for a huge showdown.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel was adamant on Monday that the game against Kennesaw State isn’t a “tune up” game, but in reality, it’s Tennessee’s last chance to “get right” before the game against Texas.
Tennessee will use this game to iron out some things on both sides of the ball — such as their best offensive line combination.
I’d also like to see the Vols give running back Daune Morris a shot as the primary punt returner.
For now, defensive back Qua Moss is serving in that role.
Moss muffed a punt against Georgia Tech (the Vols recovered), but that’s not the main reason I want to see Morris get a shot.
We’ve seen that Morris is electric with the ball in his hands — he could be a gamebreaker on special teams.
Morris is emerging as the Vols’ No. 2 running back, so he’s going to continue to get more carries each week, but he could possibly change the game as a punt returner.
Tennessee should have plenty of punt return opportunities against Kennesaw State, so it would be a good time to get Morris some reps (he had three punt returns last season as a true freshman). And if Morris looks good back there, I think the Vols should put him out there against Texas.
A punt return touchdown could be the difference in the game. Flipping field position via a good punt return could also be the difference. Morris is a playmaker — getting the ball in his hands is a good thing for Tennessee.
Kennesaw State is the perfect situation to get Morris some punt return opportunities to see if he’s the Vols’ best option back there.
