Tennessee is expected to get an important young player back for the Kennesaw State game, and that’s an important development for the Vols
The Tennessee Volunteers are dealing with some tough early season injuries.
The Tennessee Vols’ defensive line has played well so far this season — 11 sacks in two games — but depth is a concern.
Tennessee doesn’t have a lot of proven depth. And all it would take is a few injuries to expose that lack of proven depth.
That’s why it’s a big deal that Tennessee is expected to get true freshman defensive lineman JJ Finch back this week for the Kennesaw State game.
Finch didn’t play against Georgia Tech after not practicing the week before the game due to injury.
“I expect him to play,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price of Finch on Tuesday on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “I do expect him to be good to go. I think that’s just a young kid who’s got to learn to push through the aches and the pains. It’s just part of the maturing process as a young player, and so I expect him to be good to go.”
Finch is a young player, but he’s someone who made a lot of noise in fall camp.
“JJ Finch at the defensive tackle spot is someone that I’m watching early in fall camp,” said Price last month. “He’s got something to him that the coaches are really, really high on.”
“JJ Finch is one that’s probably going to help this fall,” added VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs during an early August appearance on WNML’s SportsTalk.
Getting Finch some “developmental reps” against Kennesaw State will be important. The hope is that Finch can be in the defensive line rotation and make an impact against Texas on September 26.
